How to Clean a Cashmere Robe

by Stacy on Mar 28, 2023

There is a common misconception with luxury sleepwear that the only way to care for it is to dry clean it. Dry cleaning is not only expensive, but also involves harsh chemicals which can actually destroy the fibers and shorten the life of what should otherwise be a timeless piece. At Meadow, we want you to indulge in our line of women’s sleepwear products for as long as possible, rather than worrying about how you’re going to keep it clean.

In our first line of luxury sleepwear, we launched a decadent cashmere robe that embraces the plush comfort of a spa robe. Because cashmere is such a fine fabric, it needs to be cared for in a very particular way. Typically, this process would involve bringing your cashmere robe to a dry cleaner. But, at Meadow, we want to create a line of only the best robes for women and women’s sleepwear, which is why we’ve designed our cashmere robe with the intention of being able to clean it at home. This will not only save you time and money, but will also allow you to be in control of what products are being used in the cleaning process (in order to avoid the use of harsh chemicals).

How to clean a cashmere robe (hand washing):

  1. Hand wash your cashmere robe with mild soap such as baby shampoo or a specific wool and cashmere shampoo (we love The Laundress!)
  2. Use a clean basin or tub to gently soak your bathrobe, submerging the garment and gently moving it around to loosen any debris.
  3. Once this is complete, replace the dirty water with clean water to rinse the soap out of the cashmere robe. Avoid running the cashmere robe directly under the faucet as this could damage the fibers.
  4. After the soap is rinsed out, gently compres (do not wring!) your bathrobe to remove any excess water.
  5. Do not dry in a machine. Instead, lay your cashmere robe flat on a towel and allow it to air dry. Also, avoid hanging your bathrobe to dry as this will cause the cashmere to stretch and ruin the robe’s shape.

How to clean a cashmere robe (machine washing):

  1. Machine wash your cashmere robe on a “wool” or “delicate” setting in cold water.
  2. Use a wool or cashmere shampoo instead of generic store-brand laundry detergent.
  3. Do not dry in a machine. Instead, lay your cashmere robe flat on a towel and allow it to air dry. Also, avoid hanging your bathrobe to dry as this will cause the cashmere to stretch and ruin the robe’s shape.

How to avoid pilling on your cashmere robe:

Pilling occurs as a result of surfaces connecting, like when your sweater continuously rubs against your purse, or the sleeves of your shirt rub against the torso. But, pilling can also happen when your clothes rub against each other in the closet as you continuously remove and replace your hangers. This is why we recommend rolling your cashmere robe and storing it in a drawer to both avoid pilling and any creases in the fabric!

Keeping these few tips in mind when cleaning and caring for your cashmere robe will extend the bathrobe’s life, allowing you to get the most out of your luxury sleepwear!
